What do you, Jeffrey English do for a living?

I am a professional graphic designer, who operates a design studio in New Jersey.

How long have you been in business?

My graphic design studio has been running for the last 10 years. Besides articulating and tabling design ideas, my daily brief entails meeting prospects and clients; choosing the color palette and layouts; reviewing designs for errors and incorporating changes advised by clients.

Are there unique industry challenges you would like to bring to our attention?

Every industry has a nagging challenge. For graphic designers, we have to contend with growing competition and difficulty keeping up with technology. Competition is mostly as a result of market saturation. With regard to technology, successful entities in the design field often use cutting-edge tools and technologies to stay competitive. Most designers starting out have a challenge keeping up with new design software and applications due to cost implications.

Is there a particular challenge that stands out that you were able to address?

When I was beginning my career, I had a few missteps with timekeeping, especially when working with projects that demanded utmost, creative imagination. This forced me to spend too much time to the detriment of other assignments. With the benefit of experience, training and collaboration, I have learned to accurately measure time based on the project specifications.

Is your industry experiencing an upswing, shrinking or remaining the same?

From what I see around me and the industry at large, there is a reason to be optimistic. Industry statistics from BLS show the graphic design occupation will grow by 5% in the years leading to 2026. The improvements will see more college students take up the design career. The number of design professionals shifting careers will also be greatly reduced.

How does technology, in your own assessment impact your company?

Advances in technology have been instrumental in revolutionizing the design industry. New design tools have made it easier to accomplish quality projects in record time. The other benefits of technology include increased productivity, enhanced communication and quick feedback.

Have you ever been to Miami?

I have visited the city on a number of occasions.

What part of Miami?

I have been to downtown Miami, South Beach and the serene, residential district of Coral Gables.

Did you visit any particular locations, including restaurants?

South Beach left a mark in my heart since it is a partier’s haven at the heart of Miami. This is all thanks to the rich urban culture, the ever present Florida sunshine and pristine sandy beaches. SOBE, as it is fondly known is also distinguished for its Art Deco architecture that dominates the landscape. My favorite restaurant here is the Spanish themed, The Bazaar by José Andrés. When I visited the swanky restaurant, I had the opportunity to sample the famed Spanish tapas and an array of Asiatic delicacies. The restaurant also offers an amazing selection of wines and cocktails.

Would you come back?

I will surely come back.

Was it a business or pleasure trip?

My last visit to South Beach was a pleasure trip. I dined in my favorite restaurant and had a good time basking in the sun. I would definitely recommend the SOBE neighborhood to any first time visitor.

Where can we expect from you or the business in the next 5 years?

My studio in Jersey serves clients from as far as California and the UK. I see a huge growth opportunity in areas like User Interface (UI), user Experience (UX) and branding. The studio is up to the task and will use all the available resources to explore the growing opportunities to its advantage.
